Could the Vietnam War have been avoided or handled better by the US ?
- USAFisnumber1Lv 71 month ago
Yes. Eisenhower only sent advisors. Kennedy did the same. Then Johnson became president, faked up the Gulf of Tonkin Incident and used that to send hundreds of thousands of troops. It was his war. Had we protected Kennedy better it never would have happened.

Sure........could have been easily avoided by minding our own goddamn business.
But we don't seem to be very good at that, do we?

The U.S. Air Force should have been allowed to carpet bomb North Vietnam for 30 days non stop problem would have been solved!

Yes. In 1945, Ho Chi Minh had sent a letter to Roosevelt asking that free elections be held in Vietnam rather than reverting to French Colonial status.
in 1956, Elections were to be held to unify the South led by Emperor Bao Dai and the North by Ho Chi Minh.
But the US backed Ngo Dinh Diem to become authoritarian President of the South and he cancelled the elections because he knew that Ho would win.
The CIA finally assassinated Diem in 1963 and in 1964 the US essentially declared war on the North because communists and monks were gaining ground in the South.
The whole thing can be blamed on the cold war because the US considered Communism to be a monolithic block controlled by the Russians and Chinese, rather than considering what the people wanted.
Now they make most of our tennis shoes.
