What are some must-see Castles/Fortresses in Europe?

I'm planning a trip of sorts through Europe in 3-4 years. I'm a lover of history and want to see some awesome castles. My plan is to go through Madrid, Paris, Marseille, Frankfurt, Munich, Rome, Naples, and the Vatican City, not necessarily in that order. Any suggestions for must-see castles near those areas?

    Europe is not a country. Every single one of those places has at least once castle in the vicinity, or ruins that predate Christianity. Rome has lots of ancient ruins right in the city itself, and a short train ride away from Naples are the ruined cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Vatican City is in Rome, and not all that interesting.

    There are travel guides for all the places you list that describe the local attractions.  Realize that touring castles/fortresses is like touring medieval cathedrals - after a while it all blurs together.
