Why are schools so ornately decorated? Why are educational buildings so elaborate?

For example Universities have elaborate rotundas and ornately decorated student centers and such.

Often adorned with paintings of the constellations and the clouds and such on the ceiling.

The universities also have built very expensive domes and such for what??

Why are educational buildings so ornate?

Before the 2nd World War, certainly in Britain, many buildings were built in  an imposing manner so as to impress people. Certain buildings, like banks, wanted to give an air of impopsition and security so as to encourage people to deposit their savings there. Schools and Universities wanted to appear as solid places of education and also to instil a sense of educational power in their students. Nowadays with glass and concrete buildings the same sense of solidarity is not as apparent. Also it is cheaper to make buildings more functional as decorative building is expensive.

Part of the reason is to inspire the students.

It depends on the age of the buildings. It used to be quite common to use ornate details in architecture- you see it in older cathedrals, churches, office buildings, etc. That's not true of newer buildings. Most state universities in the US have a few older buildings, and then several built after 1960. The newer ones tend to be built of concrete blocks and are very plain. They were built very inexpensively, which is why the heating and air conditioning systems often don't work very well!

Often adorned with painting ceilings?  Where do you go to school?

Some universities are several decades, even centuries old.   Cost of building was much cheaper and institutional buildings were normally designed  ornate. Many museum, banks, hotels  and even stores were very ornate. Architecture was beautiful.  In downtown Chicago you can still see the original Marshall Fields store and its elaborate  entrance ways.
