Definition 1.... 'cold warriors' were the statesmen/ politicians/ military leaders who happened to serve during the 'Cold War' (1948-90) and serving then, had to take part in it. Whether the Cold War was quiet or 'hot' during their term usually decided how much a cold warrior they had to be.

Definition 2.... 'cold warrior' refers to certain politicians/ leaders who used and twisted the Cold War to gain and keep political power and profit themselves by using the Cold War to their advantage.

    Kennedy v Nixon....…...

Kennedy, a cold warrior of the 1st type, he happened to serve during the Cold War at it's peak when it was really 'hot' and so had to take part in it.

Nixon, 2nd type of cold warrior. Ever since 1950 he used and twisted the Cold War to gain his own political power and profit. As President he kept the Cold War 'hot' or pretended to for the same reason.

"Cold Warrior" is used as a kind of portmanteau word for people who took part in what is described as "The Cold War" when the West and the communist states were in direct opposition and were figurativel at "war". No shots were fired, it was a secret war of intelligence, espionage, propoganda and ideology. In the modern world, this has become cyber war, so now the same people might be called Cyber Warriors, sounds much cooler than it really is, mostly techies trying to outsmart each other.

The Cold War lasted from the end of WW2 when the so-called Iron Curtain was drawn across Europe, dividing the Communist countries of the Warsaw Pact from the countries of the Capitalist west (who became partners in NATO) until the last days of USSR (although relations are still frosty with Putin). They fought proxy wars - eg Nixon was involved in Vietnam, Kennedy with the blockade of Cuba.

Cold warriors lived during the Cold War with Russia. A hot war is with bombs and blood. A cold war is threats and tension.
