'An estimated 17 kingdoms have ruled a part of this city over thousands of years'. What middle eastern city is this?

Jerusalem, capital of Israel.
Canaan (at the time the city was called Salem)
Greece (via Syria)
Syria (not the Greek seat of power at the time)
Crusaders (aka the UN of the Middle Ages)
Egypt (by a Kurdish sultan)
Many of these countries ruled Jerusalem multiple times over its history. Jerusalem is once again back under the control of Israel, though Israel is no longer governed by a monarchy.
