It's just one way of getting paid for their work.

Actors can get a set hourly rate, a weekly wage, a monthly salary, a retainer, or a percentage of profits, or a combination of any of those payment methods.

They don't "demand" it - it's negotiated by their agents with the producers.

Actors have to earn a living, like everyone else.  They have to decide whether or not they want the security of a regular payment for as long as they're filming or appearing on stage, or if they'll accept a much lower rate of pay as they work and later receive a percentage of profits.

It's not greedy or grasping - just whatever agreement is reached.

Many authors do the same and it's also done in many businesses, industries, etc.

keanu reeves reaped a fortune from his "net profit" revenue and gave it away. does one person need all that money when many are starving? jennifer aniston and many celebs are greedy *****.

So they can continue to receive payment from their role in the film for years after it was released.

Because if the movie is a big hit they get more money, Jack Nickelson did that playing the Joker in a Batman movie and he got 90 million $, They never knew at the time it was going to be a big hit movie.

More money to them if the money is a hit.  if they are smart, they insist on gross revenues, movie studios are notorious for creative accounting techniques.

They're betting on whatever project their working on being a success.  If it's a success they'd make more money if paid a percentage than taking a flat salary.
