You should stop grilling and never get near a grill again. You don't have enough intelligence to use one safely.

Go to WalMart and get a     chimney starter  for lighting charcoal and you

will thank me after you use it. It costs less than $10.00 and is worth every penny.

If you don't have a Walmart most any hardware store has them or can get you one.

The lighter fluid will burn off.

If the briquettes are at the proper temperature you should not have any residual lighter fluid after taste by the time you put your food on the grill.

Let it burn for about a minute.

Make sure it burns off before you put the meat on.   If the grates are reversible, you could use tongs to flip them over.

Or you could use a grilling basket to keep the food off the fluid.

when you put your meat on the grates, they will absorb some of the lighter fluid flavor. yuck!

I use old newspapers to get my charcoal started. As for cleaning the grates, I do that while everyone else is fixing their plates. Is that polite? No, I've been picking the whole time I was at the grill.
