has the IRS allowed people to wait until July 15th to file their income taxes? why some sources say that you have to still file by April 15?

i have read that you have to file by April 15th, but you can "Defer" payment until July 15th. but i thought you did not even have to file until July 15th? why this confusion? (As ANYTHING that has to do with IRS and paying taxes)

Update:

Which brings up another good question. WHY IS EVERYTHING INVOLVING PAYING TAXES AND IRS SO CONFUSING?

Perhaps you could go to the irs.gov website and see what it says under the heading of 'Coronavirus Tax Relief"

    Tax Deadline Changed

The deadlines to FILE and PAY federal income taxes are extended to July 15, 2020.

Yes, a week or so ago. Sounds like you might be looking at web articles from earlier when the only automatic extension was tot pay, not to file. Note that not all states have extended, although most have.

Some sources are for NORMAL years. This year is abnormal.  Its always 4/15 unless the entire country is shut down.  Not at all complicated.
